Failed Run to a Podcast
What started as a bit of fun after failing Mizen to Malin the first time turned into something much bigger.
What started as a laugh, a bit of fun, and a reaction to disappointment ended up becoming one of the most enjoyable parts of the whole journey.
When the first attempt at Mizen to Malin did not go the way we hoped, there was obviously frustration. We had put a lot into it, and when it ended early, it left that strange mix of disappointment, unfinished business, and wondering what came next.
The podcast started as a response to that.
How It Started
There was no big strategy behind it in the beginning.
At first, Idiots Go Running was just a way to do something positive with the experience. A chance to chat about what had happened, have a laugh at ourselves, and turn a tough moment into something a bit more enjoyable.
It was meant to be a bit of fun.
But once we started recording and speaking to other runners, it quickly became much more than that.
What We Found
The more people we spoke to, the more interesting it became.
We were not just talking about races, training plans, or finish times. We were hearing people’s reasons for running. That was the part that really stuck with me.
Some people run for medals. Some are chasing a time. Some do it for the fun of it. Some use it to clear their head. For others, it is a way of dealing with life, processing something difficult, or reacting to a moment that changed everything.
That is when it started to feel like the podcast had real meaning.
Why It Connected With Me
That deeper side of running is something I understand personally.
For me, running became a reaction to life. It became a way of responding to difficult news, of proving something to myself, and of finding a way forwards when things felt uncertain.
It stopped being just exercise.
It became purpose, focus, and a way to keep moving physically and mentally. So when I started hearing similar themes in other people’s stories, it made even more sense why running means so much to so many people.
Why the Podcast Matters
That is what Idiots Go Running really became.
Yes, it is about running. Yes, there is plenty of banter, stupid moments, and honest chat. But underneath that, it is really about people and their reasons for doing hard things.
The podcast gave us the chance to learn, hear brilliant stories, and understand running in a much bigger way than just pace, distance, or race results.
It reminded me that people run for all sorts of reasons, and all of them matter.
What It Became
What started as a reaction to failing Mizen to Malin the first time became something positive.
It became a place to connect with runners, hear honest stories, laugh at the madness of it all, and understand why people keep showing up. Some do it for achievement. Some for healing. Some for headspace. Some because they simply love it.
And that is what made it so much fun.
The podcast gave us something good out of a difficult experience. It turned disappointment into conversation, and conversation into something worth building.
Looking Ahead
In many ways, the podcast helped give the whole journey a new meaning.
It did not just help us reflect on what went wrong. It helped us understand why the challenge mattered in the first place, and why running matters to so many people beyond medals and finish lines.
That is why Idiots Go Running exists.
Because behind every runner, there is a reason. And usually, a very good story.
